Residency Program in Clinical Pharmacy - Nephrology
The Residency Program in Clinical Pharmacy provides education and training with a primary emphasis on the development of practice skills in specialized pharmacy practice area. Pharmacists completing this program will be highly qualified independent pharmacy practitioners able to provide and be responsible for improved drug therapy outcomes for individualized patients as an integral member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
In addition to clinical pharmacy activities, the residents will also be involved in educational activities which include pharmacy case presentations, journal club discussions and seminar presentations. Other teaching opportunities include co-precepting Pharm.D students who undergo clinical rotations in different wards. The residents will also be encouraged to enhance their research skills through a research project and to participate in international/national/state/local conferences and disseminate their research findings.
A multidisciplinary approach to patient care is highly emphasized in the residency program and the preceptors include several experienced clinical pharmacy practitioners and clinician preceptors. Upon successful completion of the residency, the resident will be able to pursue positions in a variety of clinical practice settings as well as in academics.
Structure of programme
The Residency Program in Clinical Pharmacy shall be of 24 months (two years) duration from the commencement of the academic term. This residency program shall be of annual system that includes ‘Residency Program Year One’ (RPY-1) extending for 12 months from the commencement of academic term which offers more generalized training, providing residents exposure to a broad range of clinical specialties. ‘Residency Program Year Two’ (RPY-2) of 12 months duration commencing from the successful completion of RPY-1 emphasizes specialty clinical pharmacy practice. In order to commence a RPY-2 residency, a RPY-1 program must be completed.
No exemption shall be given from this period of study and training for any other experience gained prior to the admission to the program. The maximum duration for the completion of the course shall be fixed as double the time of the course (48 months) and the residents have to successfully complete within the said period otherwise they have to get fresh admission. However, the stipend will be paid only for the period of 24 months.
Nephrology Speciality Practice: The Residency Program in Clinical Pharmacy in Nephrology is a specialized postgraduate training program designed to develop expert pharmacists in kidney disease management. The residents are provided comprehensive training in nephrology pharmacotherapy, dialysis, transplantation, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) management. Residents will work alongside multidisciplinary teams, including nephrologists, nurses, and dietitians, to optimize medication therapy for patients with acute and chronic kidney conditions. The program emphasizes evidence-based practice, research, and leadership in nephrology pharmacy.
A candidate who has successfully completed Pharm.D degree with minimum aggregate marks of 60% (aggregate of 5 years) from any Pharmacy College approved by Pharmacy Council of India, New Delhi and affiliated to a recognized University AND has registered himself or herself as a ‘Registered Pharmacist’ in the respective State Pharmacy Council.
- Nephrology Clinical Pharmacist: Residency-trained nephrology pharmacists provide direct patient care for renal patients in hospitals and renal units. They collaborate with nephrologists, nurses and other healthcare providers to optimize medication regimens for patients with kidney diseases.
- Hemodialysis Pharmacist: Hemodialysis pharmacists work in dialysis centers managing medication therapy for hemodialysis patients including anemia management, mineral and bone disorder treatment and dialysis-related complications.
- Transplant Nephrology Pharmacist: Transplant nephrology pharmacists provide medication management services for kidney transplant recipients including immunosuppressive therapy, infection prophylaxis and post-transplant complications.
- Ambulatory Care Nephrology Pharmacist: Ambulatory Care Nephrology Pharmacists work in outpatient nephrology clinics to manage chronic kidney disease, hypertension, electrolyte disorders and assist in preparation for renal replacement therapy.
- Critical Care Nephrology Pharmacist: Critical care pharmacists involve in the management of acute kidney injury, continuous renal replacement therapy and complex fluid and electrolyte disorders in critically ill patients.
- Pediatric Nephrology Pharmacist: Pediatric nephrology pharmacists provide specialized pharmaceutical care for children with kidney diseases including congenital abnormalities, nephrotic syndrome and renal dialysis.
- Academic Faculty: Nephrology pharmacy residency graduates can pursue academic careers, teaching renal pharmacotherapy, medication dosing in kidney disease and dialysis-related medication management to pharmacy students and residents.
- Nephrology Clinical Researcher: Residency-trained pharmacists conduct clinical research on medication use in kidney disease, pharmacokinetics in renal impairment and outcomes research in nephrology patients.
- Medical Science Liaison Specialist: Work in the pharmaceutical industry as a medical science liaison focused on nephrology medications, dialysis products and transplant therapeutics.
- Medication Safety Pharmacist: Work in hospitals focusing on prevention of drug-induced kidney injury, development of renal dosing protocols and implementation of safety measures for high-risk medications in renal impairment.
- Home Dialysis Pharmacist: Support patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis or home hemodialysis and manages medication use to ensure safe and effective therapy.
- Nephrology Informatics Pharmacist: Nephrology pharmacists develop and implement clinical decision support systems for medication dosing in kidney diseases, optimize electronic health record and initiate quality improvement process in nephrology care.

My objective is to work towards developing pharmacists as responsible health care professionals for preserving and advancing public health.
Dr. M. Ramesh is presently working as Professor & Head of the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Also, he is heading the Clinical Pharmacy Department at JSS Medical College Hospital, Mysore. In his more than 25 years of teaching & research experience, he received several awards including ‘Weary Dunlop Fellow in Clinical Pharmacy’; ‘Roche Products Fellowship Award 1998’; `Late Smt. V.G. Yeole Memorial Award 2005’ and `Late Shri. Ishwar N. Hukkeri Award 2010’. Also, nine of his research papers have won the ‘best paper award’ in the national and international conferences. He pioneered in assisting Khartoum College of Medical Sciences (KCMS), Khartoum, Sudan in establishing clinical pharmacy teaching and practice at KCMS and Bashair hospital, Khartoum, Sudan. Also he imparted World Health Organisation Sponsored Clinical Pharmacy Training Program to pharmacy teachers from six different universities in Sri Lanka. He has authored for a textbook titled ‘Pharmacist’s Intervention on Medication Therapy: Impact on Healthcare Cost’. Also he has authored for three chapters in the second edition of the textbook titled ‘A textbook of Clinical Pharmacy Practice’. He received research grants from various funding agencies like AICTE, ICMR and DST. He coordinated more than 50 clinical trials of various phases in different therapeutic areas including global trials. He has more than 65 research publications to his credit both in international and national journals. He acted as a resource person in 88 national and international workshops / seminars. Also he presented several scientific research papers in various national and international conferences. He has successfully guided 61 postgraduate Pharmacy Practice & Pharm.D students. Also, he successfully guided 2 PhD students and currently guiding 6 PhD candidates. He held several posts at various capacities in different academic and professional bodies. He has been acting as a scientific reviewer for several International and national journals. He is a member of various professional bodies like IPA, APTI, IHPA, ISPE. He visited several countries, for academic purposes, including Australia, Singapore, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Dubai, Thailand, Hong Kong, Turkey, Denmark, Austria, Czech Republic, Malaysia, China and Canada.
