Residency Program in Clinical Pharmacy - Cardiology
Overview:
The Residency Program in Clinical Pharmacy provides education and training with a primary emphasis on the development of practice skills in specialized pharmacy practice area. Pharmacists completing this program will be highly qualified independent pharmacy practitioners able to provide and be responsible for improved drug therapy outcomes for individualized patients as an integral member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
In addition to clinical pharmacy activities, the residents will also be involved in educational activities which include pharmacy case presentations, journal club discussions and seminar presentations. Other teaching opportunities include co-precepting Pharm.D students who undergo clinical rotations in different wards. The residents will also be encouraged to enhance their research skills through a research project and to participate in international/national/state/local conferences and disseminate their research findings.
A multidisciplinary approach to patient care is highly emphasized in the residency program and the preceptors include several experienced clinical pharmacy practitioners and clinician preceptors. Upon successful completion of the residency, the resident will be able to pursue positions in a variety of clinical practice settings as well as in academics.
Structure of programme
The Residency Program in Clinical Pharmacy shall be of 24 months (two years) duration from the commencement of the academic term. This residency program shall be of annual system that includes ‘Residency Program Year One’ (RPY-1) extending for 12 months from the commencement of academic term which offers more generalized training, providing residents exposure to a broad range of clinical specialties. ‘Residency Program Year Two’ (RPY-2) of 12 months duration commencing from the successful completion of RPY-1 emphasizes specialty clinical pharmacy practice. In order to commence a RPY-2 residency, a RPY-1 program must be completed.
No exemption shall be given from this period of study and training for any other experience gained prior to the admission to the program. The maximum duration for the completion of the course shall be fixed as double the time of the course (48 months) and the residents have to successfully complete within the said period otherwise they have to get fresh admission. However, the stipend will be paid only for the period of 24 months.
Cardiology Speciality Practice: The Residency Program in Clinical Pharmacy in Cardiology focuses on the pharmacological management of cardiovascular diseases including heart failure, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias and anticoagulation therapy. Residents are trained in evidence-based medication management, dose adjustments and adverse effect monitoring to enhance patient safety and therapeutic outcomes. Emphasis is placed on cardiovascular risk reduction, patient education and interdisciplinary collaboration in both acute and ambulatory care settings. The program also covers advanced pharmacotherapy and personalized medicine approaches to optimize patient care in patients with cardiovascular disorders.
A candidate who has successfully completed Pharm.D degree with minimum aggregate marks of 60% (aggregate of 5 years) from any Pharmacy College approved by Pharmacy Council of India, New Delhi and affiliated to a recognized University AND has registered himself or herself as a ‘Registered Pharmacist’ in the respective State Pharmacy Council.
- Cardiology Clinical Pharmacist: Residency-trained cardiology pharmacists provide direct patient care services in hospitals and cardiac centres. They collaborate with cardiologists, nurses, and other healthcare providers to design and monitor medication regimens, manage anticoagulation therapy, and ensure patient safety in acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions.
- Cardiac Intensive Care Pharmacist: Intensive Care Pharmacist work in cardiac ICUs managing complex medication regimens for critically ill cardiac patients, including those with acute myocardial infarctions, cardiogenic shock and post-cardiac surgery care.
- Ambulatory Cardiology Pharmacist: Ambulatory Cardiology Pharmacist oversee medication therapy for chronic conditions like heart failure, atrial fibrillation, hypertension, patient education and ensure continuity of care and patient education.
- Anticoagulation Clinic Pharmacist: Anticoagulation Clinic Pharmacist manage anticoagulation therapy through dose adjustments, patient education, and monitoring patients on warfarin, Direct Oral Anti Coagulants and other anticoagulants.
- Academic Faculty: Cardiology pharmacy residency graduates can pursue academic careers, teaching pharmacy students and residents about cardiovascular pharmacology, advanced heart failure management and anticoagulation therapy.
- Cardiology Clinical Researcher: Residency-trained pharmacists work in clinical trials evaluating new cardiovascular therapies, studying drug efficacy and safety and contribute to the development of innovative treatments for heart diseases.
- Medical Science Liaison (MSL) — Cardiovascular: MSLs in the pharmaceutical industry provide professional services to healthcare providers in the field of cardiology. They educate on new cardiovascular therapies, support clinical trials and collaborate with research teams.
- Pharmacovigilance and Drug Safety Associate: Cardiology drug safety associate involve in monitoring of safety of cardiovascular drugs and ensure the safe use of cardiac therapies in clinical practice.
